Through allocated governmental (hoka)funds, the Planetary Health working group, is developing an interfaculty and interdisciplinary minor Planetary Health. This working group consists of staff members and students from the Department of Public Health. The group works in close collaboration with various teacher-researchers across departments at Erasmus MC, as well as faculties at Erasmus University and TU Delft, to develop this new minor program.
With this minor, our aim is to educate future students who can comprehend the causes and consequences of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. From this understanding, they can take action to realize meaningful change, striving towards a more sustainable and just society. This entails mitigating the health impacts of the climate and environmental crises, adapting to their consequences, and implementing co-beneficial measures that positively impact both human health and the planet.
In addition to learning about the origins and solutions of these crises, students will explore the geopolitics of climate change and develop skills to navigate the various emotions it may evoke. We envision launching a 10-week program in 2025, expanding to a 20-week program in 2026 to fully unfold interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Together, we started on a journey to equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to address the biggest health crisis of our time.
