Support staff
2023 was the year our department said goodbye to long term department secretary Yvonne van Loon, who retired after a career of almost 25 years at Erasmus MC. After that we welcomed our new colleague Manon van Winden at the secretariat. In general, the secretariat has been providing more support for projects, e.g., recruitment of and contact with study participants and organizing (international) project meetings. Besides that, the secretariat has been increasingly involved in the optimalisation of work and HR processes at both department and Erasmus MC level.
The research support office of the department of Public Health has been managing several multi-partner projects and continuously contributes to the department’s knowledge and implementation of laws and regulations concerning health research. The research support office works together with central research support teams to create a sustainable, safe, and user-friendly infrastructure for conducting research. The focus over the past two years has been on the registration and ethical assessment of research projects, on data management and the implementation of new systems such as Pure and PaNaMa.
The administrative support staff of the Education and Training section of our department has been working closely with planners and staff members of the Education Service Center, teachers, and internship supervisors. In collaboration with the planners, we did our best to arrange optimal schedules for the students and teachers involved. A big part of the education is provided by external teachers. Therefore, we contact a wide variety of people working for other organizations than the Erasmus MC, for example within the domain of labor and health, forensic medicine, public health medicine and youth health care. Besides organizing the education for medical students, the education support staff also had to arrange a lot of internship places. In the first year of the bachelor program, students had to do an assignment called Patient Shadowing, in which they had to “walk along” with a patient in the emergency room for some hours. In the second year of the bachelor program, the students had to do a short care internship. Many external hospitals and healthcare organizations provided places to make this possible. In the master program, every student had to do a three-week internship in Social Medicine. To arrange all this, a lot of work had to be done, but the educational support staff managed well to do so!

On special occasions, we are used to giving fresh flowers to our colleagues. We started looking for a sustainable solution.
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, innovative solutions are blossoming to meet the demand for eco-conscious choices in every aspect of life. From home décor to gift-giving, two emerging alternatives are paving the way for greener floral options: LEGO flowers and dried flowers.
Compared to fresh flowers, both LEGO flowers and dried flowers offer distinct sustainability advantages. While fresh flowers often require extensive resources such as water, pesticides, and transportation, LEGO flowers and dried flowers eliminate the need for ongoing maintenance and minimize environmental impact. By choosing these eco-friendly alternatives, our colleagues can enjoy the beauty of flowers, knowing that their decorative choices support principles of sustainability and conservation.
